Toby Dammit

Toby Dammit comes to La Chunga with a smorgasbord of work behind him. A glance at some artists he’s worked with: Iggy Pop, Bertrand Burgalat, Keren Ann, Ryan Adams, The Residents, Stephan Eicher, Katharina Frank, Mark Eitzel, Johnny Depp, Devendra Banhart, SWANS… showing an extraordinary path cut by this world traveler.

Mr. Dammit was trained as a classical percussionist as a child in East Tennessee. Since leaving those mountains, he’s performed in 32 countries and made over 50 albums as a musician, producer, composer, writer and collaborator. His work on numerous feature films both Stateside and in Europe was highlighted with the premier of Johnny Depp's "The Brave" at the Cannes Film Festival in 1997.

His filmscore “Apple Jack” (release 2006) was recorded in New York with a 1930’s-style 21-piece orchestra, a hillbilly band, and sci-fi electronics. “Apple Jack” follows a pair of unique instrumental duet albums: first “Karny Sutra” - with remarkable organist/pianist Luther Hawkins, and second “Morphosa Harmonia” - with Thomas Wydler, veteran drummer of Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds.

Toby’s album “Top Dollar” reveals another world entirely. It was recorded in Paris with Bertrand Burgalat as producer, and together Toby and Bertrand fashioned a monstrous psychedelic percussion-only album. Viciously manipulated analog 808 drum machines were combined with multiple slamming drumsets and symphonic percussion, then run through a wall of amplifiers and treated hands-on with live effects.

Toby recently relocated to Berlin and has brought projects to produce, beginning with New York band “Bee and Flower”. Toby fashioned the band a giant symphonic production, which breached Titania with 20 musicians, including a male and female choir, a whirlwind of delicate melodic percussion, pianos and keyboards, a giant string section and a four person bass section.

Next is perhaps Toby’s most special project of all: An all-exotic percussion Christmas album. “Have A Percussive Christmas With…Larry & Larry” just may be the icing on the cake. Toby’s percussionist partner is the legendary Lary 7, known in New York as the founder of the “Analog Society” (and also as Matthew Barney’s photographer). The two have been twisting Christmas fantasia songs into exotic percussion interpretations that may only be understood by little children.

And what comes next, no-one knows!
