Radio 4

"Gotham!, is a blistering shot of agit-disco, stridently political and almost militantly danceable...With their splashy trebly guitars and snotty vocals, RADIO 4 recall beat-happy punks from The Clash on down." SPIN 06/02

RADIO 4's record GOTHAM! is a hook-saturated, dance-rock record, complete with a post-punk fortitude that frankly compels you to move your ass. The album by the Brooklyn based band has been released all over Europe on City Slang. It is one of the most exciting, most passionate and most aggressive albums the guys at C.S. have released in a long time. Anthony Roman's first words, spat out on opening salvo "Our Town" - "New electric sounds / Rattle underground" - set the agenda. With the constant bass pulse and the synth cacophony of blips, bleeps and squeaks universal throughout GOTHAM!, these are, indeed, new electric sounds. There's no mistaking the influences - from GANG OF FOUR to THE CLASH to TALKING HEADS to LIQUID LIQUID - but seldom have you heard anything so fresh, so animated, so focussed, so political and so fucking full-on funky, GOTHAM! speaks a universal language, articulately and savagely. RADIO 4's music is decidedly forward thinking, and it puts the group at the top of their class. DANCE TO THE UNDERGROUND is scheduled to be the first Single. Apart from remixes by PLAYGROUP, THE FAINT it will also feature a version by New Yorks hottest production duo DFA, who had a big impact on the sound of GOTHAM!. Half dance party, half political rally, GOTHAM! is a rock record for a new era.

RADIO 4 debuted in the spring of 1999. Taking influence from the late 70's/early 80's post punk scece (GANG OF FOUR, MISSION OF BURMA etc.), the band quickly recorded a three song EP for the Gern Blandsten label. Soon after, they hooked up with noted Boston producer Tim O'Heir (SEBADOH, BUFFALO TOM) to record their first full length, "The New Song and Dance". In early 2001, R4 again entered the studio with O'Heir to record the 12" EP Dance to the Underground, which included a dance remix of the title track. The remix showed R4 heading in a new, more dance oriented direction and receivedextensive club play at NYC hotspots like Spa, Don Hills and Shine. With the sounds of contemporaries like PRIMAL SCREAM and !!! invading their headspace, RADIO 4 went about the task of recording their second full length, GOTHAM!. After cutting basic tracks in a Brooklyn basement studio, the band went to work with the acclaimed production duo the DFA. Made up of Tim Goldsworthy and James Murphy, the influence of the DFA on the album is immeasurable. Their experience with both electronic based artists (UNKLE, DAVID HOLMES), rock bands (TURING MACHINE, TRANS AM), and those who mix both (THE RAPTURE, PRIMAL SCREAM, ZERO ZERO, BS 2000) helped Radio 4 realize their vision.
