Friends of Dean Martinez Led by lap-steel genius Bill Elm, accompanied by the frankly amazing guitarist Mike Semple, the brilliantly named instrumental outfit FRIENDS OF DEAN MARTINEZ have specialised in the finest blend of epic desert country twang for over ten years. Their magnificently evocative, cinematic work has won them a worldwide audience and global acclaim. Combining a gorgeous mixture of sweet melancholy, Southwestern ballads and more experimental moodscapes, occasionally kissed by feedback and tasteful noises/electronics, theirs is a music that sounds both familiar as well as utterly, intriguingly alien. Fans of artists like Calexico and Ennio Morricone will find plenty to love. Earlier work drew on more fifties and sixties sounds, drenching their sound with more retro, surf licks, but the revivalist feel is now merely incidental, a dash of flavour in a style that is unique. Given their associations with the likes of Calexico, Giant Sand and Naked Prey - all of whom sport members who have guested with FRIENDS at various points in their recording career - it is clear that this is a band of high class pedigree. ![]() |
